Advancing Pet Safety Before, During, and After Surgery

Our doctors and medical team at Coronado Veterinary Hospital understand the worry and concern our clients feel when their pets need anesthesia for surgical or dental procedures. At our hospital, we take every precaution to provide the safest anesthesia for your precious family member.

Pre-Anesthetic Exam and IV Placement

First, we perform pre-anesthetic blood tests to determine your pet's general health status. We formulate an individual anesthetic protocol based on those blood tests and a thorough physical examination. All our anesthetic patients have IV catheters placed and receive IV fluids throughout the procedure. We use safe and short-acting anesthetic drugs to decrease recovery time.

Monitoring Your Pet

During anesthesia, a veterinary technician monitors your pet's cardiovascular parameters using our sophisticated equipment. We chart your pet's heart rate, respiration rate, ECG, blood pressure, and blood oxygen content every five minutes so we can check for any concerning change in those values and respond early to restore those values to normal.

Anesthesia and Ventilation

Our anesthetic machine is equipped with a ventilator to assist your pet's breathing and deliver healthy oxygen to their lungs. Throughout the procedure, your pet lays comfortably warm in a surgical heating blanket to maintain normal body temperature.

When it's time to wake them up, your pet is monitored by a veterinary technician ready to offer them loving reassurance and ensure they have a smooth recovery. We will call you as soon as your pet is awake to alleviate any worries you may have.
