Dr Macpete

Like most veterinarians, Dr. Ruth MacPete always knew that she wanted to be a veterinarian. She grew up In Chicago in a house filled with dogs, cats, rodents, birds, fish, guinea pigs, a chinchilla and even a duck!

She attended the University of California, Berkeley for her undergraduate studies and then moved back to her home state for veterinary school at the University of Illinois. It only took one winter back home to make her realize she would be headed back to California for good after vet school! She has been in California ever since and loves it.

Dr. MacPete has worked in private practice and shelter medicine for over 20 years and feels blessed to have the best job in the world with the cutest patients.

Outside of work, she is passionate about educating pet parents about important pet health issues and has written hundreds of articles that have appeared in magazines, blogs and news outlets. She is also the author of the award-winning children’s picture book Lisette the Vet, about a little girl who wants to be a vet! She often visits local elementary schools to share her book and talk about what it’s like to be a veterinarian.

She has a big dog and a little dog, two naughty cats and two human kiddos that keep her busy at home. In her spare time, she loves to hike, bike, play pickleball and travel with her family.
