Exceptional Puppy & Kitten Care in Coronado and Imperial Beach

When you look into the face of your new puppy or kitten, you just want to melt inside. But it’s important to know that your bundle of joy has special health needs that only your veterinarian in Coronado, also serving Imperial Beach, can provide. puppy and kitten care from your veterinarian in coronado and imperial beach

The First Stop

The very first stop with your new pet is our Coronado Veterinary Hospital for an initial physical. During this first visit, normally at around 8-weeks of age, we give your pet a thorough examination to make sure there are no hidden health issues. We will also set up the first-year health plan which includes all the necessary vaccinations, parasite prevention and control, dental care, and spaying or neutering.

During the first months of your puppy or kitten’s life, our veterinarian in Coronado will see your pet more frequently to ensure healthy development and to begin the all-important series of vaccinations that will protect him from dangerous, and even deadly, diseases. A more frequent vaccination schedule prevents overwhelming the pet’s as yet undeveloped immune system.

Vaccination Categories

There are two types of vaccinations: core or non-core. Core vaccines protect your pet from potentially life-threatening diseases while non-core vaccinations are based on your and your pet’s activities and lifestyle.

Core and Non-Core Vaccines

The core vaccinations for puppies are canine parvovirus, canine hepatitis, distemper, and rabies. The core vaccines for kittens are feline distemper, feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus and also rabies. Non-core vaccinations for puppies are Leptospirosis, Lyme, Canine Parainfluenza, and Bordetella (kennel cough). Non-core vaccinations for kittens include feline leukemia, feline aids, feline infectious peritonitis, chlamydophila felis, and Bordetella Bronchiseptica. We will work with you to determine the best non-core vaccinations for your pet.

Parasite Treatment and Prevention

Some parasites, especially worms, are common in young pets. At our animal hospital serving Coronado and Imperial Beach, we check all kittens and puppies for worms with a fecal sample. If worms are present, we administer medicine formulated to kill them.  Sometimes it may take two doses to completely rid the pet of worms.

Another pesky parasite for young pets is fleas which can leave them itching incessantly and even cause dermatitis. The best measure against fleas is prevention with one of three product types: pill, topical or collar. These products also protect pets against ticks.

Pet Population Control

We believe that it’s essential for all pets to be spayed or neutered both for the health of the animal as well as to prevent adding to the countless numbers of pets crowding pet shelters or wandering about homeless. We encourage kitten owners to have their females spayed as young as 8 weeks and between 6 and 9 months for puppies. The ideal time for neutering is between 6 and 8 weeks.
